Sugar Camp Scenic Byway

Mark Twain National Forest

Location:
Barry County

News, Updates, & Warnings:
Very Limited Parking for horse trailers.  There are a few pull-offs and clearings on the side of roads that can be used.

Directions:
From Cassville, take Hwy 112 south to Forest Road 197 (aka FR2275), turn east.  Follow 197 to Forest Road 1004, turn south.  There is a small open area that can accommodate trailers before you get to the fork in the road.  For additional pull-off areas, continue east on Forest Road 197.

Miles of Trails:
8 miles of gravel road, plus many more miles on the side roads.  Sugar Camp Byway is 28 miles long in total, but all of the section between Hwy 112 and Hwy 86, on Forest Road 197, are on paved highways and not suitable for horseback riding.

Camping Allowed:
Yes, primitive camping anywhere there is a pull-off or open area within the National Forest Land.

Trail Notes:
All gravel road riding.  There is added mileage from many gravel roads that branch off the main road.  Some hills are pretty long and it can be a hot ride in the summer because it's open and sunny.  Lack of water sources would make it hard on the horses if it's too hot.  There is a fair amount of ATV use on these roads on the weekends, but very little traffic during the week.  It is beautiful country in the area and the road is very scenic.

Other Trail Users:
Hikers, bike riders, motorcycle riders, ATV riders, and cars.
